We are going to use this one math question to help you assess how ready you are for the SAT or ACT. First answer the question as best you can. Then, read through the directions below.

Level 1: Maybe you don’t really remember how slope works. A level 1 student is not at all confident with math, and needs to learn or re-learn many concepts, like fractions, percentages, exponents, slope, functions, and basic geometry.

Level 2: You know how to use one of the slope formulas. You plugged in the slope and substituted 3 and 0 for x and y. Then you were able to plug in the answer choices to the formula you got and solve this question. A level 2 student knows math rules but learns them by rote memorization, and lacks a comfortable facility with what the concepts mean.

Level 3: You understands what slope means and feel confident about numbers, so you pictured the line rising one from (3, 0) to (3, 1) and then going across 11 to (14, 1). A level 3 student knows and understands the rules. Feels confident applying them in new situations.

At the end of an hour or two I was ready for the journey. Not much packing up was necessary, because we were going in the overland stage from the Missouri frontier to Nevada, and passengers were only allowed a small quantity of baggage apiece. There was no Pacific railroad in those fine times of ten or twelve years ago--not a single rail of it. I only proposed to stay in Nevada three months--I had no thought of staying longer than that. I meant to see all I could that was new and strange, and then hurry home to business. I little thought that I would not see the end of that three month pleasure excursion for six or seven uncommonly long years!
