Johanna

tutor, avid reader, yoga-lover

A born and bred New Yorker, Johanna is a middle school and high school teacher of Latin and Greek at The Dalton School. After attending Saint Ann’s School in Brooklyn, she received her BA from Swarthmore College in Latin and Greek, an MA at the University of Maryland in Classics and worked on her PhD in Classics at the City University of New York, Graduate Center.

Johanna has been tutoring for almost fifteen years and it is this love that made her turn to teaching. As someone who once hated Latin as a beginner student years ago, Johanna knows firsthand how hard classical languages can be; she also knows the importance of one’s teacher and tutor in making the subject more interesting and comprehensible. Now a Classics convert, Johanna believes that every student can learn to love Greek and Latin for their textual nuances and grammatical minutiae—even in the works of Caesar.

…a text I love to teach

My favorite text to teach in the original language or in English translation is Homer’s Odyssey for Greek and Virgil’s Aeneid for Latin.  I love the epic tales and the representations of the heroes within their flawed worlds.  I especially love the role of gender and women within the tales.

…a favorite place I’ve visited

South Africa

…eight people living or dead I’d invite to my ideal dinner party

My Grandmother, Ovid, Mandela, Obama, Anthony Bourdain, Plato, Seth Meyers, Elton John

…something I can’t stop thinking about

How much time we truly waste on our phones, and how we can stop ourselves and reconnect with the world!
