…a text I love to teach

Siddhartha by Hermann Hesse. In just the first few pages, Hesse describes his protagonist’s dilemma with prose that is tight and sparse but still rich with imagery.

…a favorite place I’ve visited

Studying abroad in Freiburg, Germany, I was lucky to spend a lot of time in the foothills of the Black Forest. The trails outside Freiburg have a magical quality to them, and it’s hard not to imagine the Grimm Brothers’ creatures running around behind trees and in the shadows.

…eight people living or dead I’d invite to my ideal dinner party

Socrates, Friedrich Nietzsche, Iris Murdoch, Muhammad Ali, James Baldwin, Fyodor Dostoyevsky, Ruth Bader Ginsburg, BKS Iyengar

…something I can’t stop thinking about

How to prevent internet technology’s endless stream of diversion from pervading my day-to-day life, and the lives of my students.
